At 37, Edem Offiong, one of Nigeria’s most accomplished female table tennis players, has announced her retirement from Nigerian National Table Tennis Team.
In an Instagram post on Thursday, Offiong shared her decision to step away from the international stage, “To explore new horizons.”
“A proud 5-time Olympian, I bid farewell to the national team… I extend heartfelt gratitude to everyone who’s supported me on this incredible journey: family, friends, and well-wishers.
“Your unwavering love and encouragement mean the world, from humble beginnings in Bayside to international recognition,” she added.
She also expressed thanks to the IOC, NOC, NTTF, and credited her achievements to God’s gifts and opportunities.
Offiong, who has earned six gold, four silver, and five bronze medals at the African Games, stated her commitment to nurturing “young table tennis talents, inspiring the next generation to surpass my achievements.”
Her career spanned two decades, making her Olympic debut in Athens in 2004 and qualifying for every edition up to the 2024 Games in Paris.
