…amid allegations of misconduct

The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has appointed an ethics and disciplinary inspector to investigate Premier League referee David Coote, following the emergence of two damning videos that have raised serious concerns about his conduct.

The 42-year-old referee was initially suspended by the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) on Monday after a video surfaced on social media, appearing to show him making disparaging remarks about former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp. The Football Association has also launched an investigation into Coote’s comments.

However, the situation took a darker turn on Wednesday when another video emerged, this time appearing to show Coote snorting a white powder during Euro 2024 in Germany, where he was officiating. The video, published on The Sun newspaper’s website, has prompted UEFA to take swift action.

“A UEFA ethics and disciplinary inspector has been appointed to evaluate a potential violation of the UEFA disciplinary regulations by the referee Mr. David Coote,” UEFA said in a statement.

“Further information regarding this matter will be made available in due course,” the statement added.

The PGMOL has reiterated its commitment to taking the allegations seriously, stating that Coote remains suspended pending a full investigation.

“David’s welfare continues to be of utmost importance to us, and we are committed to providing him with the ongoing necessary support he needs through this period. We are not in a position to comment further at this stage,” a PGMOL spokesman said.

The developments have cast a shadow over Coote’s career, with many calling for a thorough investigation into his conduct.

The UEFA investigation will examine potential violations of the organization’s disciplinary regulations.

As the probe continues, Coote’s future in the sport hangs in the balance. The incident has sparked concerns about the integrity and professionalism of referees, highlighting the need for rigorous standards and accountability.

The investigation’s outcome will be closely watched by the football community, as UEFA seeks to uphold the highest standards of conduct and integrity in the sport.
