Abuja – Korea DPR on Friday defeated Asian rivals Japan 5-4 on penalties to emerge winners of the U-17 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Jordan.

After a hard-fighting 0-0 draw at the end of regulation time at the Amman International Stadium, both teams moved on to a penalty shootout to determine the winner.

The North Koreans are winning the title for the second time after its first win in New Zealand in 2008.

Korea had defeated Venezuela 3-0 while Spain also lost 0-3 to Japan in the semi finals of the event.

Korea DPR, who had sent Nigeria out of the competition in its last group game, has not lost any of its matches at the tournament as well as Japan.

In the third place match however, Spain defeated Venezuela 4-0.

The tournament which began on Sept. 30 ended today.
