ABUJA – The Nigerian Senate has confirmed the appointment of Adeleke Adewolu as executive commisssioner representing south west zone on the governing board of the Nigerian communications commission.
Senate also directed its committee on communications chaired by senator Oluremi Tinubu to investigate the appointment of executive commissioners on the board of Nigerian Communications Commission to ensure that all geo-political zones are represented this was as a result of some lawmakers from the south-east that informed the senate that their zone is not represented on the board insisting that it must be addressed based on federal character.
Meanwhile, the Senate has charged NCC to ensure that all unregistered lines are deactivated in order to tackle the issue of insecurity across the nation.
Nigerian Senate has commenced debate on the general principles of the 2020 appropriation bill, ahead of passing it for second reading.
One of the critical issues that came to the fore during the debate was the 7.5% increase in value added tax and the huge amount appropriated for debt servicing.
First to raise the alarm was the senate minority leader Enyinnaya Abaribe who made contributions after the Senate majority leader, senator Yahaya Abdullahai given the lead debate on the N10.3 trillion appropriation bill for the year 2020.
Abaribe described the document as a budget of taxation, adding that the budget estimates are not sustainable.
But some lawmakers in their contributions, explained the required economic growth of the country can be achieved if the budget is properly implemented.
In his contribution, Benue north-east Senator, Gabriel Suswam, said the budget projections could lead Nigeria into more borrowing.
The upper chamber continues deliberation on the 2020 appropriation bill.
