WARRI – Residents of Ughoton community in Okpe Local Government Area of Delta State have taken to the streets to protest what they referred to as “fraudulent activities” of the light committee who they accused of not remitting bills paid by the residents.

According to information gathered from one of the protesters who did not want his name published, “the committee embezzled all the money we paid through them to BEDC, and when they sensed that the fraud was ready to be busted, they tampered with all the transformers, thereby throwing the entire community into darkness – a ploy to stampede us to pay another money to cover the fraud.

“We had to protest to the BEDC office at Shaguolo, near WRPC where we were reliably informed that the company did not cut power supply to Ughoton.

“On getting back to our community, we discovered that some vital parts on the transformers have been disconnected, which were instantly reconnected.

The residents said they will “dissolve the light committee with the speed of light”, and inaugurate a new one to take charge.
