…as Senate urge FG to declare state of emergency in Security

ABUJA – The Nigerian Senate has received the 2021 budget proposal for the Nigeria Police Trust Fund transmitted to it by President Muhammadu Buhari for consideration and passage.

The President’s request was read on the floor of plenary, Wednesday by the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan.

According to President Buhari, the request was made pursuant to the provisions of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund Act which provides for funding through a special intervention fund.

The estimates of revenue and expenditure in the funds 2021 budget proposal, are consistent with the statutory purpose of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund terms of providing funding through a special intervention fund for: training and retraining of personnel of the Nigeria Police Force to enhance their skill and overall improvement, performance and efficiency in the discharge of their duties as well as responsibilities.

In a similar vein, the Nigerian Senate has condemned in strong terms the recent abduction of students and teachers from Government Science School, Kagara, Niger state.

This was contained in a motion debated on the floor on Wednesday, lawmakers questioned the competence of the federal government in protecting its Citizens.

Early on Wednesday morning, residents of Niger state and its environs woke up to the news of the abduction of an unconfirmed number of students and teachers of Government Science School, Kagara, Niger state.

Moving a motion under matters of urgent public importance at Wednesday’s plenary session, Niger East Senator, Sani Musa expressed worry that the armed men who carried out the abduction were dressed in military uniforms.

He Lamented that North west and North central are bedeviled despite the large number of military dispatched to the regions.

The Senator urged President Muhammadu Buhari to as a matter of urgency declare a state of emergency on insecurity just as he was asked to consider and implement the resolution of the senate adhoc committee on security challenges in Nigeria.

On his part Niger north senator, Sabi Abdullahi recalled how about 40 passengers traveling along the Niger state axis were abducted a few days ago.

He expressed worry over the unfortunate incident pointing out how close Niger state is to the FCT.

The Senator representing Niger South Bima Enagi faulted the federal government saying it is incapable of protecting its citizens from a series of security challenges in various parts of the country.

President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan in his ruling lamented scant resources security agencies are forced to work with due non provision of the needed gadgets.

Lawan also talked about the need for the government to come up with a strategy to ensure adequate security in schools.
