The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) South – South National Vice Chairman, Chief Dan Orbih on Monday led other political leaders in the state to receive the first jab of the Oxford AstraZeneca coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccine as the government intensifies efforts to contain the pandemic.
Orbih, who took his first jab of the vaccine at the complex of Edo State Ministry of Health, charged other residents to avail themselves of the opportunity of receiving the vaccine to protect themselves from the deadly virus.
He said: “The vaccine is something everyone should make an effort to take; it is good for us; it’s the surest means to prevent being infected.
“I am reiterating the call by Governor Godwin Obaseki, urging citizens to come out and get vaccinated. I have taken the first jab and the second one will be in June.”
“This vaccine was approved by the World Health Organization (WHO) for use and there is nothing to be afraid of. Edo has the best hands on ground to attend to residents. So, I will urge others to take the vaccine and protect themselves,” he added.
Speaking after four days of taking the vaccine, the state coordinator of the World Health Organization (WHO), Mrs. Faith Ireye, reiterated that AstraZeneca is safe and effective for emergency use.
“The vaccine is of quality and I encourage everyone to take it. I want to also call on the other frontline workers to take the vaccines. The elderly should also take advantage of this vaccination period; it’s safe.”
On his part, Edo State Covid-19 Incident Manager, Dr. Andrew Obi, who was vaccinated five days ago, said he is feeling great and healthy.
“I see my vaccination as part of my civil and public responsibility to help in cutting the chain of the spread of the pandemic. I want to reiterate that the AstraZeneca vaccine that was deployed to Nigeria is safe and effective.”
