BENIN CITY – Edo state commissioner of communication and orientation, Bar. Ewanta Andrew, has charged residents to support the governor Obaseki-led administration by paying tax to the state government.

Ewanta gave the charge yesterday in Benin when his family member paid him a solidarity visit on his appointment as commissioner.

He said the payment of tax by the citizenry enables the government to fulfil its responsibility to the citizens through infrastructural development among others.

“I want you to support this government by paying your taxes. I don’t want you to default because if you call me I will not come. People should pay taxes”

“When one is appointed, there is tendency for family members to be coming for contract, I think the greatest legacy I would leave is good name that will not disappoint you and the confidence repose in me”

“I will also appeal to you not to put pressure on me, what I will get at the end of the month is my salary, I am not in position to award contract” he said.

“I don’t want to be seen as a commissioner who did more for only his family but for entire Edo people who gave the governor their mandate against the wishes of godfathers in the state.

He said “governor Obaseki wants to build Edo state where prosperity not bases on where you come from but on the bases of what you can do and hard work, where godfatherism doesn’t work.

He said governor Godwin Obaseki didn’t appoint him through godfather but his conviction that he (Ewanta) is qualified to do the job well.

Earlier, the leader of the family Roland Ewanta, said the visit was to assure the commissioner of their support in the discharge of his duty.

“We want you to use the wisdom of God given to you to promote and orientate the public of what the government is doing for the generality of the state.

He commended the governor for seeing what is good in their son, assuring that he would not betray the confidence reposed in him.
