AUTHORITIES of Esan South East Local Government Council, Edo State, have intervened to effect repairs on the deplorable Uromi-Ubiaja Road, though a federal road.
When The SUNDAY OBSERVER visited the road, it observed council officials from the works department putting Hardcore (big stones) and Stone Base on the failed portions of of the road.
Speaking to newsmen during the repair, the Acting Chairman and Head of Local Government Administration of the council, Dr. Gregory Elimihele, exclaimed that he decided to make the council intervene because the road, though a Trunk A road, was mostly used by the people of Esan South East Local Government Area, and transporters.
He added that the council was also moved to take out of it’s meagre resources to carryout the repairs, because of the security situation in Esan South East Local Government which had made it a security flashpoint.
With the repair, according to him, the road will not only be favourable to motorists, but will also assist security, as kidnappers and Armed Robbers who previously use the bad spots for their nefarious activities will no longer find it convenient.
“We know it’s a Trunk ‘A’ road, but the road is mostly used by people of Esan South East, and by transporters/travellers. People have suffered untold hardship because of the road: wear and tear to their vehicles; their vehicles breaking Down here; and again because of the security situation.
“Again, because it’s a festive period. So within the available resources in the council, we decided against all odds, to rehabilitate the failed portions on this road. The failed portions covers about 2km. From this place to under the bridge are very bad”, he explained.
The Director of Works, Esan South East Local Government, Engr. Dan Ayevbuomwan said they were effecting repair on the road to enable people in the area and travellers have pleasurable ride on the road, as well as prevent accident on the road.
He praised and thanked the Acting Chairman, Dr. Gregory Elimihele for making funds available from the meagre resources of the council to carryout out the rehabilitation.
Some respondents, including a motorist, Apst. Charles Aikore and Commercial Motorcyclist, Mr. Exodus Okojie, lamented the harrowing experience they were going through, while using the road, and thanked the council profusely for their intervention.
