ABUDU – As part of efforts to contribute to the development of Abudu, a group under the aegis of Abudu in Diaspora Group has commenced installation of about 250 solar streetlights in the community.

The project which commenced on Monday, when completed is expected to enhance night life as well as boost socio-economic activities at Abudu, administrative headquarters of Orhionmwon local government area of Edo State.

According to members of the group, they are Abudu indigenes residing in different parts of the world; who saw the need to come together under one platform to discuss development and contribute resources towards giving back to their community.

“We (Abudu in diaspora group) are responsible for the Abudu lighting up project; our motive was to help our people back home at Abudu. Because it looks like nothing is actually happening in Abudu; people don’t normally stay there.

“When we use to stay in Abudu, people come from outside the state to come and stay in Abudu. It was a very beautiful place. We’ve Esigie College, a lot of activities was going on. We have a bank, night life was going on. We want a situation where those things have to come back again; were we abroad, when we come back to Nigeria, we can be able to stay at Abudu, our hometown where we were born, instead of Benin and other places”, a member of the group, Eghosa-Kings Igbinoghodua said in chat with The Nigerian OBSERVER

Igbinoghodua added, “We are not a political group; it is non governmental, it is nonprofit. We have more to do to assist the less privileged. We have other projects, and we hope at least we should be able to do one project every year in the community. the solar streetlights project is just a starting point for things to come”.

Igbinoghodua who noted that the group was still at its early stages of formation, further added that the group shall be engaging with the state and local government in future to know where to compliment them in the development of the area.

On his part, a resident of Ago-Ogbeide in the community, Sunday Idahosa expressed appreciation to the group for the gesture, saying the solar streetlights would “brighten up” the area (at night) as it has not been without power for more than four years.

“What politicians did not do, ordinary people; our children are doing it for us, so they deserve our prayers for them to be able to do more”, Idahosa told our correspondent.
