Birniwa (Jigawa) – The Birniwa Local Government Council in Jigawa yesterday said it had expended N2 million on water projects to enhance access to safe drinking water in the area.
Alhaji Shu’aibu Abdullahi, Director, Water and Sanitation of the council, told newsmen in Birniwa that the money was spent on the repair and maintenance of hand pumps in rural communities.
bdullahi said part of the project was the construction of a bore hole at Birniwa Abattoir, to enhance sanitation and supply of healthy meat in the area.
e said the council had engaged 104 ad hoc sanitation workers and placed each of them on a monthly allowance of N5, 000.
The director said the sanitation workers were engaged to clear wastes and drains as well as clean offices and other public buildings.
He said the council had in addition, conducted a campaign to clear wastes and drains in Birniwa and other major towns to enhance sanitation and protect the environment.
He urged the communities to cooperate with the sanitation workers in the efforts keep the environment clean.
