Tottenham winger Andros Townsend believes Jermain Defoe will receive a hero’s welcome if he returns to White Hart Lane as a Sunderland player today..
Defoe is set to complete a deal that will see Jozy Altidore join Toronto FC in exchange, and could be registered in time to feature for the Black Cats against Spurs.
Townsend insists he is looking forward to seeing his former team-mate on the pitch again and is all too aware of the danger the 32-year-old could still pose, especially having recently watched him in training.
“It’ll be great,” the winger told reporters after Tottenham’s 4-2 FA Cup victory over Burnley. “He’s been at the training ground for a few weeks now and hopefully he hasn’t been in the manager’s office looking at his tactics board!
“Jermain’s a fantastic character who served this club well, so I’m sure if he plays the fans will give him the reception he deserves.
“He’s a legend at Spurs, the goals he scored over the years were fantastic and I hope he doesn’t play on Saturday for personal reasons but if he does play he’ll get a great reception.
