The Principal Manager, Public Affairs Division, EKEDC Mr Ademola Adegoke, said this during an interview with newsmen.
Adegoke said that the smart meters would address irregularities and bottlenecks associated with the billing system and the challenges posed by meter by-pass by consumers.
Reports say that ?smart metering is the new technology in electricity metering which creates an inter-face between electricity providers and electricity consumers.
The smart meter is available both in prepayment and post-paid formats.
It also allows the electricity providers to access and monitor consumers meters from their offices ?, to ascertain if the meter is in working condition or has been by-passed.
Adegoke said that the smart meter technology became necessary due to increased cases of meter by-pass and energy theft which have contributed in truncating the services of the company.
He said that EKEDC had installed over 16, 000 pre-payment meters within its network, while smart metering installation would commence very soon.
Adegoke urged consumers within the EKEDC, who had meter and other related issues to lodge their complaints through the appropriate channels, assuring that such complains would be promptly addressed.
