Asaba – Chief Ejaiefe Odegbala, Chairman, Sapele Local Government Area (LGA) of Delta State said the council had revoked all contracts for revenue collection in the area.
Odegbala also advised people in the area to stop making payments to any individual or organisation but to the council’s bank accounts.
In an interview with newsmen after a church thanksgiving in Asaba for his victory, the council chairman said the decision was taken to block all revenue leakages.
According to the chairman, the LGA is struggling to pay its workers salaries because of its poor revenue.
He said that his administration would do all that was necessary to improve the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) of the council in order to provide social amenities to the people.
“The challenge I have now is on how to generate revenue. So, we are trying to introduce measures to enable people to pay through the banks because before now some people collected on behalf of the council.
“The allocation that comes from the Federal Government to the LGA is merger and can hardly pay the workers’ salaries and as I speak our workers are being paid half salaries.
“If we can raise revenue, we can plan with that one; but now revenue from the federal allocation is nothing to depend upon,” he said.
