MANCHESTER United are set to dip their toe into the transfer market for the first time in this window with the signing of England and Southampton right-back Nathaniel Clyne, according to the Daily Star. He is likely to be joined at Old Trafford by the Dutch World Cup winger Memphis Depay, according to the Star’s sister newspaper the Sunday Express. Clyne is likely to cost around £30 million while PSV Eindhoven’s Depay has a price tag of £20 million. Suddenly United are looking more like neighbours Manchester City in their approach to the transfer market.
There is little doubt that United could do with a few additions to boost a floundering squad. With the FA Cup representing United’s last prospect of a trophy this season, some might argue that it would be nonsensical if Louis van Gaal goes with what he has for the rest of the season. But you also wonder if Clyne or Delpay represent men who are good enough to deliver for United at the moment? Both players represent potential. And are a gamble. And the question of United landing a couple of reliable central defenders has yet to be answered.
