Adnan Januzaj has questioned his use by Louis van Gaal, saying Manchester United’s tactics do not suit him.
The Belgium international was the breakthrough star in David Moyes’ ill-fated reign at Old Trafford but he has suffered following the summer change in management.
Primarily impressing in a wide role under Moyes, the 19-year-old has struggled to find a place in Van Gaal’s evolving system, either in the 3-5-2 formation which requires wing-backs or the 4-4-2 with a narrow midfield diamond.
He did start Saturday’s win over Leicester City as a wide attacker, but says opportunities in his preferred position have been hard to come by.
“Yes, the system can make it more difficult for me to play there but I have to keep working,” he said. “That is what I am doing in training every day, as I want to get more games this season.
“I’m not really a wing-back. It’s harder for me because there is more defending involved and I’m not really a defender.”
Asked what his long-term position should be, he replied: “It depends on how my football evolves. My favourite position is as a No10 or a winger. There are lots of players here and I can play in different roles – it’s just a case of taking my opportunities.
“I’ve been a No10 since I was young and I can play there more easily but I know I can also play as a winger.”
