ABUJA- Hajiya Rammatu Tijanni, the National Women Leader, All Progressives Congress (APC), has appealed to wealthy citizens to uplift less privileged Nigerians in their midst.
Tijanni made the call when she led a group of APC women to the Hope for Survival Orphanage in Gishiri village, Abuja as part of activities to mark the 2015 International Women’s Day.
She said the task of giving succour to the less privileged in the society transcended political and even ethnic boundaries.
“If we can have a place in our heart to accommodate (people), there will be space for everybody; we all have one thing or the other that we can offer; we do not need to depend only on the government; we can do a lot.
“We teamed up as APC women not to campaign but to extend our hands of fellowship on this International Women’s Day celebration that is not only about us; it is about the younger ones.
“We decided not to use the ones in town; anyone that can afford a place in town is already a big one; you have many small ones out there in Gwagwalada; you have about two in Lugbe and Kuje.
“We are extending to other places, they need us, these people need development, we can also extend and support them.“
The APC women leader also urged Nigerians in positions of authority to help uplift the living standard of the poor.
She said her group would soon visit hospitals to reach out to women in need of various forms of support.
The Manager of the orphanage, Mr Cephas Thaddeus, expressed appreciation to the women for their kind gesture.
Thaddeus, who spoke on some of the challenges the orphanage was experiencing, called on Nigerians to come to the aid of the orphanage.
“We are indeed touched by the kind gesture that is being extended to us in Hope for
Survival Orphanage.
“The biggest challenge we have now is this particular building.
“It is pathetic to see where the boys are sleeping, but we have been trying to see how we can complete the building, especially the roofing aspect.
“We will be very grateful if the roof is completed.“
The women donated food items, furniture, a power generator, furniture, toiletries and other essential commodities.
