LAGOS – The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Lagos yesterday said it would continue with the Presidential elections rescheduled in 90 polling units in five of the 20 local government areas of the state.
Mr. Femi Akinbiyi, the state Head of Public Affairs of the commission told newsmen that elections were inconclusive in the affected areas on Saturday.
He said the affected council areas were Alimosho, Eti- Osa, Kosofe, Oshodi-Isolo and Somolu.
According to him, elections are ongoing in 21 polling units across Shasha/Akowonjo, Egbeda/Alimosho, Olofin, Igando/Egan, Ipaja North, Ipaja South, Ayobo/Ijan Village and Abule Egba/Meiran/Alagbado Registration Areas of Alimosho Local Government Area (LGA).
Also, in Eti Osa Local Government Area, he said that elections were ongoing in five polling units in Aja/Sangotedo registration area and 57 polling units at Oworonsoki registration area of Kosofe LGA.
In addition, Akinbiyi said that elections were ongoing in five polling units in Orile-Oshodi registration area of Oshodi-isolo LGA and two polling units in Bajulaiye Registration Area of Somolu LGA.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mr. Akin Orebiyi, had said the elections were rescheduled due to some challenges, including malfunctioning of Card Readers for accreditation of voters and late arrival of electoral materials.
Journalists report that the malfunctioning of the smart card readers in some areas of Lagos State delayed the electoral system till late in the night in some units.
The challenge made the commission to resort to the use of electronic voter register for accreditation.
There are 8, 462 polling units in the state spread across 245 registration areas.
Meanwhile, at polling unit 014, Kosofe Isheri-Olowo-Ira (Magodo), voting commenced at 10 a.m. on Sunday.
Also at polling unit 050A, Kosofe Isheri-Olowo-Ira (Magodo), voting commenced at 11 a.m. because accreditation had been completed on Saturday.
Voters had been accredited on Saturday in the areas but ballot papers did not arrive early and voting was pushed to Sunday.
Voting was on going as at press time.
