BENIN CITY – The Speaker of Edo State House of Assembly, Hon. Uyi Igbe has said that the 6th Assembly would be inaugurated at the main assembly complex in Benin City.
He made the disclosure when he led legislators to an on-the-spot assessment of the main assembly complex barely a year since the lawmakers relocated to the old assembly in Government House in the aftermath of the June 9 crisis which led to the suspension of the former Deputy Speaker, Hon. Festus Ebea and four others.
At yesterday’s plenary, the state House of Assembly had adopted its business calendar of 24 days for the fourth session, fourth quarter of the fifth Assembly to begin parliamentary activities.
Majority Leader of the House, Hon. Philip Shaibu announced that the fourth quarter has a total of 24 days with the month of April having nine days and the month of May 15 days.
According to Hon. Philip Shaibu, the 24 days of the fourth quarter brings to a total of 185 sitting days mandated by constitutional provisions with the first quarter having 35, second and third quarters having 71 and 55 days respectively.
Meanwhile, a bill for a law for the establishment of a college of Nursing and midwifery has been forwarded to parliament for consideration and passage into law.
According to him, “we have come here to ascertain the level of damage which would enable us effect the necessary repairs and cleaning up of the entire complex as Furniture, Computers, Air-Conditioners and other valuable facilities are all in bad state.
This time later today yesterday, renovation of the building will commence and the staff may return to the main complex before the week runs out; hopefully before the end of May, every facility in the complex would have been restored to enable a hitch-free inauguration of the 6th Assembly,” he said.
