ABUJA – Change mantra of the in coming administration of Mohammadu Buhari appears to be gathering momentum yesterday, as senators-elect Ben Maurice Bruce (Bayelsa) and Dino Melaye (Kogi) indicated their resolve to ensure cut in the federal legislators’ humongous allowances.
In a chat with journalists at induction workshop for newly elected members of the National Assembly at the International Conference Centre, Abuja, Mr. Ben Bruce, the proprietor o Silver Bird Television, was furious that the gap between the rich and the poor was widening by the day.
He noted that while the poor citizens braced up to possible consequences of going to the polls to elect their leaders, majority of the rich ones who had promised voting for him fled the country overseas along with their families.
Mr. Bruce further reiterated the change slogan of the in-coming administration, warning that it should not just be a noise making or carnival of some sort. Instead, he submitted that it should be real in all sense of it.
To this end he promised championing a “movement” in the Senate that will ensure reduction in the legislators’ allowances, plug all loopholes in the system, put the executive on its toes through regular and effective observance of oversight functions of the lawmakers.
He therefore enjoined the Nigeria media to enlist in the movement, to help him realize his vision, stressing, “should I fail, it is you that fail, we must work for the down trodden, we must help them….”
Also speaking to the journalists, Hon. Dino Melaye declared unequivocally, that the current allowances of Senators of the Federal Republic must be reduced as sacrifices towards effecting changes in Nigeria for the common good of the people.
