KADUNA – The Kaduna State Council of Imams yesterday commended President Goodluck Jonathan for his “humility in defeat” in the presidential election and charged Nigerians to remain peaceful.
The Chairman of the council, Sheikh Abubakar Tuni, said at a news conference in Kaduna that the president’s acceptance of defeat in the elections helped in dousing tension in the country.
The Imams also commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for conducting “free, fair, transparent and credible election”.
The council further commended the role played by security agencies in ensuring peace during the polls by “operating within the rule of engagement.”
The Imams, however, reminded elected leaders to live up to expectations by discharging their responsibilities with the fear of Allah.
It reminded the leaders that they would be made to account for the responsibility given them and be judged according to their actions.
The Imams appealed to those celebrating their victory to do so within the confines of the law and not to endanger their lives and those of others.
The council urged Nigerians to come out en-mass on April 11 to elect governors and members of state assemblies.
It said all Nigerians should intensify prayers for peaceful co-existence and the progress of the country.
