BENIN CITY – Edo State Deputy Governor, Dr. Pius Egberanmwen Odubu said the contributory pension scheme is a major policy intervention of government for the safeguard of retirees.
The deputy governor made the remark at a one-day seminar on the contributory Pension Scheme in Benin City.
The Seminar was organized by the state council of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC). The scheme according to the deputy governor’s representative, Prince Ekpenriebe Akenzua, is against the backdrop of the old system which impoverished pensioners through poor funding and mismanagement, leaving pensioners in penury without social security.
He emphasised that Edo State runs a worker-friendly government where the welfare of serving and retired workers remains a cardinal objective.
Prince Akenzua said the state was among the first to implement the minimum wage Act pointing out that the state has ensured the regular payment of salaries and allowance with a robust framework for prompt payment of pension benefits across the state.
In his opening remarks, the state NLC Chairman Comrade Enoma Ademoku said pension is a necessary end that every workers looks forward to in his or her career.
He noted that the organized labour in Edo State has remained passionate about the transition from old pensions scheme to the new one and that the process reduces friction and add value to the scheme.
The one-day seminar which featured paper delivery had as its theme “General Overview of the Contributory Pension Scheme, its benefits, challenges and the legal framework”.
