BENIN CITY – The Edo State governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole has appealed to ‘ Parents, especially mothers to ensure that they utilize the opportunity offered by the National Immunization Plus Days (NIPDS) to immunize their children, aged 0 -59 months against Polio and other Vaccine diseases.
Comrade Oshiomhole who made this plea at the Palace of the Enogie of Etete, Sapele Road, Benin City while inaugurating the 2nd Round year 2015 National Immunization Plus Days said that the ceremony was to sensitize the people of the State on the importance of immunizing children against childhood diseases.
The Governor who was represented by the Commissioner for Health, Dr (Mrs) Aihanuwa Eregie who spoke through the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr Peter Ugbodaga stated that his administration will continue to implement and maintain a very well articulated policy on Primary Health Care because of his belief that PHC is an essential health care for all citizens of the state.
Reaffirming his unflinching support for the programme which he said was quite
laudable and beneficial to the children, the governor noted that as at February, 2015, Edo state has achieved a coverage of 80 percent routine immunization, adding that efforts must be made to meet the national target of 87 percent which is needed to ensure that the state has a high herd immunity.
In his contribution, the state Director, Primary Health Care, Dr. Eghe Abe said that during the week long exercise which commenced on Saturday April 25 – 28, 2015, Vaccinators would move from house to house, churches, schools, mosques and markets places while as he enjoining all mothers and caregivers to bring out their children for
the immunization.
Contributing, the Enogie of Etete, His Royal Highness Cedic I. Omorodion commended the state governor for bringing about good development of the children of the State, adding that the health of mothers and children has received a great boost during administration.
The Enogie who spoke through his wife, Barr. (Mrs) Stella Omorodion however requested for the organization of more health programmes to educate parents, as well as the establishment of more Health Care Centre in the community for easy access to health care for the people.
In their separate remarks, the representatives of WHO and the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHDC) commended Edo State government for paying more attention to the health needs promising to continue to partner with the state government to move the health sector forward.
High point of the ceremony was the administration of oral Polio Vaccine to the children by the representative of the Governor as Dr. Eghe Abe State Director of PHC and the wife of the Enogie of Etete, Barr. Stella Omorodion led the state immunization team to Santana market for the immunization of all children in the market.
