ABUJA- Mr Daniel Uwaezuoke, the Director, Basic and Secondary Education, Federal Ministry of Education, has urged stakeholders to review the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) standard for improved quality.
Uwaezuoke made the call in Abuja during a one day annual review meeting of all registrars and chief executive officers of states and FCT examination bodies organised by the ministry.
He said the review was essential as it would harmonise the procedures and standards in the conduct of Basic Education Certificate Examination across the country.
He added that the review would also formulate uniform process of obtaining valid Continuous Assessment scores in line with the National Policy on Education.
“The annual review meeting is important as it is expected to eliminate the disparity that may exist in the quality and standard of the conduct of Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) at the state and national levels.”
Uwaezuoke said that the meeting will prescribe a common form of generating standard, valid test items and testing for practical skills.
Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Mr Mac-John Nwaobiala, urged the participants to utilise their knowledge in ensuring that standard of education was improved through this review.
“I charge all delegates to bring their expertise to bear in the course of deliberations, so that posterity would remember them for improving the standard of education in Nigeria.’’
He recalled that the National Council on Education in 2007, approved the harmonisation and standardisation of education at the basic education level throughout the country.
He said the decision was principally to ensure that the instrument for testing at the basic level was the same standard.
He added that certificate obtained at the basic education level would be acceptable for admission at all Senior Secondary Schools nationwide.
