LAGOS – Three men, who allegedly broke into a building and stole items valued at N3.9 million, have been brought before a Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.
The accused — Joseph Ogeche, 22; Charles Edet, 29; and Chinedu Nwafor, 21 — are standing trial on a three-count charge of conspiracy, burglary and stealing.
According to the prosecutor, Insp. Peter Nwaugwu, the accused committed the offences between January 12 and March 14 at No. 3A, Mokoya St., Obanikoro, Lagos.
He said the accused broke into the house of the complainant, Mr Olakunle Ojoro, damaged and stole copies of Nigeria Weekly Law Reports from October 1985 to December 2006 valued at N2.9 million.
Nwaugwu alleged that the accused also stole Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004 series valued at N1million.
The offences contravened Sections 285 (7), 307 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011, he said.
Section 307 prescribes a seven-year jail term for burglary, while Section 285 (7) provides seven years imprisonment for stealing.
Section 409 stipulates two years for conspiracy.
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The Chief Magistrate, Mr. P.A. Ojo, granted the accused bail in the sum of N500, 000 each with two sureties each in like sum and adjourned the case to June 10 for hearing.
