LAGOS – A catholic priest, Rev Fr. Fredrick Akaajime, has urged journalists to use the media positively for the pursuit of salvation and nation building.
Akaajime made the call at St Anthony’s Catholic Church, Alagbado, as Catholic faithful all over the world marked the 94th World Communication Day.
The priest said that the media had the right to give the people the right information at all times.
“Today, people write or talk because of freedom of expression but not minding the effect on people.
“It is either they are adding, subtracting or exaggerating thereby making people angry.
“This is done to attract people to their work but do not care to know how the caption would affect the people,’’ he said.
The priest said that lies had increased in our society due to the abuse of the media, noting that the people were not after watching things that were morally good.
According to him, people have abused the media and not only the media abusing the people.
He said: “We abuse the media due to the misuse of the media such as telling lies on the phone and unhealthy addiction to pinging and chatting’’.
He, however, urged media practitioners to help in nation building by giving accurate and right information at all times.
He said that their work could make or mar the nation and the people.
