A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja on Wednesday adjourned hearing of corruption charges against Sani Lulu, a former Chairman of the Nigeria Football Association (NFA), and three others to June 17.
The case was adjourned because of the ill-health of the presiding Judge, Justice Evoh Chukwu.
Reacting to the adjournment, the Defence Counsel to Lulu, Sunday Ameh (SAN), however, said that his job was to defend his client, adding that it was left for the judge to decide.
“We address the court on the strength of the evidence before the court, and then, it is for the judge to decide whether the case of the prosecution is better preferred or he will prefer that of the defence.
“We ‘ve been on this matter since, and there are other cases pending in court and since the case was adjourned, I think fairness demands that other cases should have their own attention too.’’
Lulu, alongside Bolaji Ojo-Oba, a former Secretary-General of the NFA, and a former board member, Taiwo Ogunjobi, are facing corruption charges on account of their stewardship while in office.
Amanze Uchegbulam, a former NFA First Vice Chairman, is also among those answering charges brought against the quartet by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The former NFA chieftains are standing trial on an eight-count charge ranging from misappropriation of the 2010 World Cup funds and the purchase of two Marco polo luxurious buses without following due process.
They are also standing trial for the distribution of World Cup tickets, payment of estacode and allowances to 220 Nigerians who went to watch the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, among others.
