Makurdi – Some residents of Makurdi in Benue State, have advised the incoming administration of Gen. Muhammadu Buhari to reverse the privatisation of the power sector.
The residents said in separate interviews with newsmen that the privartisation had not stopped persistent power outage in the country.
One of the residents, Mr. Wilfred Tyokula, said the purpose of the entire exercise was to ensure steady power supply, but noted that the reverse had been the case.
He lamented that in spite of regular hike in tariff, electricity supply has remained epileptic in the state and nationwide.
Tyokula said it was outrageous for the power distribution companies to be collecting money from consumers wothout commensurate services.
“This is outrageous and consumers are compelled to pay whether they use light or not.”
In his contribution, Mr. Geoffrey Abaver described the power outage in recent times in the state as “ very unusual.”
According to him, there has been no noticeable changes in power supply since the privatisation.
Other residents, Mrs Veronica Tarhule and Tyongi Adudu, advised that government to reverse the privatisation of the power sector because of what they called high level of inefficiency.
“Even if the government still wants the power sector to be in the hands of the private sector, it should revoke the present contract it has entered into with the existing companies, they are grossly inefficient.
“Their performance remain abysmal and disheartening,” Adudu claimed.
