GAB Okafor, the Medical Coordinator, Okpekpe 10-Kilometer Race, has released the guidelines for this year’s edition of the competition in accordance with the IAAF competitions’ guidelines for road race.
This is contained in a press statement signed and released by Adetokunbo Ojeikere, the media officer in charge to news men.
Not less than 3,000 participants are expected to participate in the race slated for May 16 in Okpekpe, Edo.
The statement said that the main components for the road race include : pre-participation evaluation, briefing for participating athletes, qualified medical team and medical volunteers.
Others that would be briefed on the roles that they would play before they would be deployed are: doctors, nurses, EMTs and Physiotherapists, it said.
The statement also said that some of the medical personnel would be station at strategic aid stations along the route and the finish point to offer services to participants.
“First response teams to give immediate first aid along the course of the race will also be available,’’ the statement said.
It said that the medical team would provide major support and aid at the finish line with all the emergency support and medical supplies.
It said that it would also provide minor aid station at the water stations to provide first aid and relief for minor injuries.
According to statement, fully equipped Advanced Life Support (ACLS) ambulances will be at the finish line and along the course of the race.
It said that the organizers would also provide an additional ambulance for handling minor emergencies, a sweeping vehicle to assist tired participants.
The statement also said that Heat Stress Index Flags would be made available depending on the weather condition.
