Ibadan-JUST eight days after the death of a student of the University of Ibadan, Mayowa Alaran , the management of the institution yesterday said it had concluded all arrangements to start conducting annual medical screening for its students in order to know their health status.
Dropping this hint while briefing newsmen on the position of the university over the death of the 200 level student who died last week was the Vice-Chancellor of the school , Professor Isacc Adewole.
Adewole who came in company of some principal officers said that the whole university was grief on the unfortunate incident that caused the death of the deceased , Mayowa , a student of Department of Health Education and Human Kinetic .
He noted that the annual screening exercise was in continuation of a similar one introduced for staff of the institution four years ago.
Mayowa Alaran had on May 6th lost his life after slumped and was rushed the Jaja clinic but was said to have not attended to by the staff in the clinic.
The death later led to an unprecedented students protest the following morning which eventually paralized both the academic and non-academic activities in the citadel of learning and its environment .
The VC however added that the university in order to prevent future occurrences had intensified efforts in reforming the health services in the institution.
Adewole deposed that it was sad to note that some of the workers need to be well trained rather than allowing part-time workers to serve at the Jaja Clinic owned by the university .
His words :” We will continue to decentralized the health services, we are aware as management the feelings of our students, perception is very important, I am aware that some are doing part-time service, you cannot be in Jaja Clinic and be doing part-time service, we are also going to inject new staff. ”
He said the university in its bid to provide good and qualitative health servicee for both staff and students,the university is planning to establish students health services which will be different from the normal health services.
He stated that as part of the reform of the institution’s health services , efforts are being made to ensure that all ambulances be at alert every day.
The VC further disclosed that training and retraining programmes would be provided for students on how to handle first aid.
Adewole used the occasion to condole the family of the deceased studen and prayed for the repose of his soul .t
Late Mayowa Alaran had since been buried accord to the muslim rites by the family.
