Port Harcourt -The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has urged youths in the region to shun restiveness and support Federal Government’s programmes.
The call is contained in a statement issued by the Commission’s Head of Corporate Affairs, Mr Toye Abosede, on Wednesday in Port Harcourt.
The statement quoted Abosede as stating that the call was made when principal officers of the Niger Delta Youth Movement (NDYM) – an umbrella body of youth organisations in the area, visited the Commission.
Abosede quoted the NDDC Managing Director, Mr Bassey Dan-Abia, as saying that the Commission would provide assistance to NDYM for the development of the region.
He said “NDDC commended the  youths for their recent successful Unity Convention in Bayelsa and reaffirms that it is in the interest of the region that all youth groups are united.
“I call on youths not to allow their activism to dampen their support for Federal Government, especially now that the price of crude oil has dropped with its attendant economic consequences.
“It is only when we are united that we can make progress; because a house divided against itself cannot stand,’’ Abosede quoted Dan-Abia as saying.
The NDDC head of corporate affairs also quoted the National President of NDYM, Joe Jackson, as saying that the group was making plans to protect public infrastructure and installations in various communities from vandals.
Jackson said the group was partnering with other stakeholders to foster unity and sustainable empowerment in its quest for capacity building, wealth creation and employment for the region’s youth.
He added that a programme expected to be sponsored by NDDC would train 180 youths drawn from the nine states making up the Niger Delta for training on poultry and fish farming.
“The training is a way of meaningfully engaging and empowering the youths,’’ he said.
