UYO – Some residents of Uyo, the Akwa Ibom state capital, have urged the Legislative and Judiciary arms of government to cooperate with President Muhammadu Buhari for the realisation of his dreams for Nigeria.
Speaking with newsmen in Uyo weenkend, a resident, Dr Edidiong Ebitu, said the president’s inaugural speech was balanced.
Ebitu, who teaches Management Science at the University of Calabar, said the speech was full of hope for Nigerians at this point in time.
He noted that the speech had talked about tackling corruption, insecurity, educational decay and unemployment.
“I wish him well, it is a daunting task, I urge the National Assembly and the Judiciary, as arms of government in a democracy, to cooperate with him.
“As a democratic government, he needs the understanding of the legislators to translate his ideas into concrete realities. I pray that he leads by example,” Ebitu said.
He advised the president to select a formidable team that shared in his vision for the country.
Speaking in the same vein, another resident, Mr Linus Udofia, called on members of the National Assembly to give Buhari maximum cooperation to enable him succeed in reforming the country.
Udofia, who is a former Chairman of Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) in Akwa Ibom, urged the assembly to make sacrifices for the fight against corruption to succeed.
“Buhari as I know is a man of his word. My fear is the members of the National Assembly that will be working with him.
“He will need their cooperation to achieve all his campaign promises. They should be ready to forgo some of their benefits,” Udofia said.
In his reaction, the immediate past State Chairman, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Mr Unyime Usoro, said the president’s inaugural speech showed that he was committed to the job.
Usoro said that the president deserved the support of all Nigerians to solve the problems of unemployment, insecurity and corruption.
He however urged the president to take the welfare of workers as paramount in his reform agenda, stressing that without a robust civil service, there would be no development.
Usoro advised the president to act in the best interest of the nation in all his policies and programmes.
In her reaction, a political science student at the University of Uyo, Miss Agnes Okon, congratulated the president on his assumption of office.
Okon called on the president to make sacrifices in governance that would improve the standard of living of Nigerians.
She advised the president not to compromise with corruption at all in his daily running of the administration, urging him to make bold steps to diversify the economy.
