BENIN CITY- The Edo House of Assembly yesterday summoned the management of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) over the disconnection of Igarra community from the national grid.
This was contained in the house resolution passed during plenary in Benin
The resolution followed a matter of urgent public importance on the oppressive and malicious short down of power supply to Igarra community and its environs raised by Mr Emmanuel Agbaje, member representing Akoko-Edo 11 on the floor of the house.
Moving the motion, Agbaje said BEDC   removed the transformer servicing the Igarra community and its environs without explanation.
He said the community has remained in darkness for over one month adding that, the community was suffering untold hardship following the action of the BEDC.
“Mr speaker, my community has been in darkness following the removal of the transformer servicing the community by BEDC without explanation.
“Even when I went there to find out the reason for their action, I was not granted audience,’’ he said.
Mr Foley Ogedengbe, the majority leader of the house who sympathised with the people of Igarra community said “we must stop the culture of impunity exhibited by BEDC.
“If they want to recover their property, you must dialogue and explain to the community stating why the transformer have to be removed,’’ he said.
Mr Ojo Asein, member representing APC Owan West condemned the act in totality and called for the invitation of the management of BEDC to appear before the house to explain why they have subjected the community to untold hardship.
The house therefore resolved that the management of BEDC appear before the house on July 21.
The house also called on the management of BEDC to as a matter of urgency restore power supply to the community,’’ he said.
