Port Harcourt – Super Eagles Media Officer, Toyin Ibitoye, on Monday said the National U-23 team played top quality football better than the Congolese side in their Olympic qualifying match.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Nigeria defeated Congo 2-1 at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, Port Harcourt.
Ibitoye said the clash between Nigeria and Congo was a good game because the quality of football played by the Dream Team was commendable.
“It was a very good game, the quality of the match was very good, our team played very well but unfortunately, we did not convert all the chances that we had.
“If we had converted about 80 per cent of the chances, the story would have been different but this team is good enough to go a long way,” he said.
Ibitoye said he was optimistic that if the team could build up the momentum, Congo would have to play through their skins to get a good result in the return leg.
He said the Congolese were very passionate about their game as they were able to convert the only chance they had.
“So, obviously, we have to make it tighter at the back and be more clinical in front because the Congolese would want to get a goal and shut-up their defence.
“But, I think it would be difficult for them to keep this fluid playing team from scoring even in Congo; I am impressed with the quality of players,” he said.
The Eagles Media Officer said he was happy with supporters and fans that came out to watch the match as the atmosphere was fantastic.
“I am happy that we have this kind of atmosphere; for a long time, we have not had people to come out to watch our games to create that real match atmosphere.
“Our boys were in Port Harcourt and played on a good pitch before a full stadium, with the support, cheering, ambience and everything for football,” he said.
Ibitoye said he hoped that the Rivers government would always throw their arms open to welcome the national team when they are looking for a place to play.
