BENIN CITY- Edo State Government has again declared its readiness to return Edo to its leading position in the education sector in Nigeria.
The Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon.(Dr.) Pius Egberanmwen Odubu made the declaration in Benin City yesterday while receiving 5000 copies of Continuous Assessment Report Book for Primary School titled Edo State of Nigeria State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) continuous Assessment Report Book for Primary School donated by Alhaji (Chief) Umoru D. Oyarekhua as part of activities to mark his 77th birthday.
Receiving the books, Dr Odubu, who represented Edo State Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, said “Mr. Governor believes investment in Education is investment in human resources” and “Mr. Governor places high premium in Education and that explains his heavy investment in the education sector.”
He explained that in the South-South Geo-Political Zone in Nigeria, Edo State has the least of school drop -out but with contributions like that of Alh. Oyarekhua very soon there would not any drop -out in Edo State adding that the Governor Oshiomhole administration has equally done very well in all other sectors in the state.
On the rating of Edo State in external examination, the Deputy Governor disclosed that Edo State has moved from the 27th position in 2008 to the third position and that it would move higher and higher in ranking due to initiatives such as that of the septuagenarian.
Rt. Hon. Odubu noted on Alh Oyarekhua’s gesture, “If we get many of your kind, we are sure that Edo State will be better for it,” just as he thanked the donor immensely for the magnanimity.
While assuring the donor that the SUBEB report books would get to the children especially as the Chairman of Edo State Universal Basic Education Board, Prince Steve Alao (JP) was present at the ceremony, the Deputy Governor wished Alh Oyarekhua many returns of his birthday.
Before presenting the books to the state government, the donor, Alhaji Umoru Oyarekhua observed that Governor Oshiomhole has revolutionalised infrastructure development even in the education sector in Edo State hence he should support such effort by donating 5, 000 Continuous Assessment Booklets/ Dossiers to the state free of charge for onward distribution to schools across the state.
According to the Septuagenarian “The donation to the state government and other Non Governmental Organisations (NGO) in the state was part of my activities to mark my 77th birthday on 18th June, 2015.”
He commended Governor Oshiomhole on his infrastructural development of the state and prayed God to bless him and his family in his onerous tasks of developing the state.
The Secretary to Edo State Government, Prof. Julius Ihonvbere and the state Head of Service, Jerry Obazele were among dignitaries present at the ceremony.
