Lagos – A Lagos lawmaker, Mr Saka Fafunmi, on Saturday said that only true federal system would produce the yearnings and aspirations of the masses in Nigeria.
Fafunmi (APC-Ifako/Ijaiye 1) disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.
“It is a known fact that Nigeria witnessed true development when regional government was being practised.
“The development in the Northern, Western and Eastern regions was because of true federalism.
“Every region seemed to understand their language and they were able to govern themselves effectively with just a man of vision while others shared the vision.
“Once people speak the same language, they grow faster than when they have diverse languages.
“Nigeria is a heterogeneous country with over 400 ethnic languages, so it is not an easy country to govern,’’ he said.
The lawmaker added that those who compared Nigeria with other climes were ignorant of the peculiarities that characterised the country.
He said “when people start comparing us with other nations that speak one language, they don’t seem to understand the implications of diverse languages, culture and interests in Nigerian governance.’’
Fafunmi, therefore, called on the government to domesticate Nigerian constitution in major languages to deepen democracy so that an average Nigerian could understand his rights and privileges.
