BENIN CITY – Following the immediate suspension of the Chairman of Oredo Local Government Council, Hon. Osaro Obazee, last week by the Edo State House of Assembly, in what had been alleged to be misappropriation of the council funds, non payment of workers’ salaries and diversion of Internally Generated Revenue accruing to the council, the legislative arm has frozened the accounts of the council.
Speaking to The NIGERIAN OBSERVER at the Council’s Legislative Chambers, last Friday, the House Leader/Head of the Legislative Arm, Hon. Ernest Edebiri, said that the resolution of frozen the council’s accounts climaxed immediately after an emergency session was called to unravel the circumstances leading to an alleged attempt by a principal officer of the council to use some signed cheques to defraud the council the cum of Eighteen million Naira (N18 million).
According to him, you know that we are in our quarterly recess and we were surprised to hear that on Thursday 8th October 2015, one of the staff of the council had problems with a principal officer while trying to use some signed cheques to steal the sum of N18 million and consequently, we have to call an emergency session where we deliberated on the issue and resolved that henceforth the accounts of the council be frozen till further notice.
Hon. Edebiri, further maintained that the resolution which was signed at the plenary on Friday 9th October 2015 by 10 out of 12 members in the house was to forestall accountability and transparency which had remained the bedrock of this present administration of President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government, saying it is the responsibility of Nigerians to join hands with the president to fight corruption, insecurity and others for the betterment of the people.
