Abuja – A total of 130 Bills on Thursday in Abuja, passed through first reading in the House of Representatives.
Out of the bills, which were read out by the Clerk of the House, Mr Sani Omolori, 127 were for amendment of existing laws, 11 would be repealed while 12 were new.
The Speaker, Yakubu Dogara, said it was the first time in the history of the House that such number of bills was presented.
He said that the country had been functioning with old legislation which had not been effective.
Dogora reiterated that all the bills would be passed within the first quarter of 2016.
He directed the Committee on Rules and Business to schedule not fewer than 20 bills for second reading at every sitting.
The bills for amendment of Acts are Medical and Dental Practitioners Act, National Eye Centre Act, Casino Taxation Act and Workers Compensation Act and Economic and Financial Crimes Commission Act.
They include Hire Purchase Act, Code of Conduct Bureau and Tribunal Act, Prevention of Crimes Act, Water Resources Act, Students` Union Act, Price Control Act and the Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission Act.
The new Bills are Corporate Manslaughter, Animal Health and Husbandry Technologist, Nigerian Aeronautical Search and Rescue, Federal Capital Territory Water Board, and Special Needs.
Others include Police Procurement Fund, Federal Capital Territory Public Service Commission, Federal Capital Territory College of Agriculture, FCT Resettlement Compensation and Rehabilitation Board. (NAN)
