Ibadan – A cleric, Rev. Isaac Awoniyi, has urged the media to play conscientiously its change agent role by embarking on mass enlightenment of the people for national development.

Awoniyi, a cleric at MOOC Memorial Church, Ibadan, made the plea on Sunday at a thanksgiving service organised to mark the end of the Oyo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) 2015 press week.

The cleric said journalists should not relent in the discharge of their duties, adding that paramount among these was enlightenment.

Awoniyi also urged journalists to be objective in the discharge of their duties while rallying support for the nation to attain its position among the comity of nations.

“The role of the journalists in nation building cannot be over emphasised.

“They must be truthful and sincere to their callings. They should reject corruption, be objective, oppose societal evils, uphold righteousness and be knowledgeable, ” he said.

In his remarks, Mr Gbenga Opadotun, the Oyo NUJ council chairman, commended the Planning Committee of the Week for a successful programme.

Opadotun, who said that the large turnout recorded at the programme was rare in the history of the council’s annual press week initiative, paid kudos to members for their support.
