Benin – The Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Pastor Uguru Usani Uguru on Tuesday in Benin, expressed disatisfaction with the ongoing housing project at Egba community in Edo state.
Usani expressed his feelings while inspecting the level of completion of the estate comprising 40 units of bungalows, drainage, asphalted internal roads, water supply and security fence.
Nine oil producing states are the beneficiaries of the ministry’s housing schemes located in Delta, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Bayelsa, Edo, Rivers, Ondo, Imo and Abia.
The minister explained that the houses were built to compensate the indigenes whose lands were taken by the Federal Government for oil exploration.
He stressed that the ministry would no longer condone a situation where projects would linger without any definite period of delivery.
“The contract was awarded almost five years ago and we are just tired of all these ongoing projects that have been ongoing almost at indeterminate period of time.
“We have resolved that these projects will not continue to be at the state of ongoing again.’’
He said that the Federal Government was committed to providing accessible and affordable housing units for the citizenry.
According to him, a critical evaluation needs to be carried out on the project to determine whether the contractors met the scope of work designed for the project.
