Asaba – The Delta State Police Command has announced an indefinite ban on all forms of public protests and processions with immediate effect.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Alkali Usman, said in a statement in Asaba on Tuesday that the ban became expedient to ensure public safety in every part of the state.

“The general public is hereby informed that the Delta State Police Command has banned all forms of public procession or protest in all parts of the state with immediate effect.

“This decision has been taken in order to safeguard public safety,” he said.

The statement signed by the command’s Public Relations Officer, Mrs Celestina Kalu, advised groups wishing to carry out processions to seek police protection.

It warned that any group, union, association or individual caught violating the order would be sanctioned according to the law irrespective of their status.

“Law abiding citizens are advised to go about their lawful businesses and report any person(s), unions or associations trying to breach public peace promptly to the police or other security agencies,” the statement said.

It said the command had reinvigorated its security apparatus to ensure the safety of all law abiding residents of the state and public utilities in the new year and solicited the support of the public to curtail crime.
