BENIN CITY – Edo State House of Assembly yesterday adopted a resolution urging the relevant law enforcement agencies of government in the state to dislodge, arrest and prosecute Fulani herdsmen responsible for the destruction of lives and farm crops across Orhionmwon local government area.
The resolution also directed that the Divisional Police Officer in the Council and the representative of the cattle rearers in the communities affected be invited to parliament.
The adoption of the resolution followed the   presentation and hearing of a matter of urgent public importance by Hon. Roland Asoro of Orhionmwon South Constituency.
Hon. Roland Asoro in his matter of urgent public importance said several communities namely, Ugo, Sokponba, Adeyonba and  others have been under siege for months unending as a result of the grazing activities of the cattle herdsmen.
Hon. Roland Asoro said they go about carrying dangerous weapons such as assault rifles, knives to intimidate, maim, rape and carry out their violent activities.
Speaking further, the lawmaker from Orhionmwon South revealed that the herdsmen have continued to perpetrate their nefarious activities which sometimes result in burning of farmlands to enable fresh grass grow for their cattle to graze, this has continued unabatedly with impurity even when resolutions to control grazing activities have been passed by the House.
While suing for the co-operation of the House in support of Hon. Roland Asoro in checking the excesses of the normadic herdsmen, Hon. Festus Edughele of Esan South East condemned in its entirety the activities of these herdsmen whom he described as callous when they amputated the right arm of a man in his constituency.
Hon. Edughele, said it was time we outlawed grazing activities in the state as the people of the state are expecting action from us in order to put an end to the wanton loss of lives, crops, humiliation, and rape.
Hon. Monday Ehighalua of Esan West Constituency advocated for the making of laws that will check and regulate the activities of normadic herdsmen as well as protect the lives of the farmers and their crops.
The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Victor Edoror along with other lawmakers described the activities of the cattle herdsmen as a recurring decimal irrespective of the resolutions passed by the House noting that it was time for proactive measures to be taken through effective legislature as a way to stem the wave of crimes committed by the herdsmen.
Parliament in its submission unanimously adopted the resolutions emanating as a result of the consequential motion on the matter of urgent public importance.
