BENIN CITY – September 20, 2015, will forever remain a dark day for the family of the mother and child who were recklessly crushed to death along Murtala Muhammed Way, Benin City, Edo State by one Mr. Ogieva Ikponmwonsa, a motor mechanic at No. 34 Agbonmwonba Street, Off Murtala Muhammed Way, Benin City.
According to an eye witness who spoke with our correspondent on the condition of anonymity, revealed that the deceased and her child were on their way home from school on that fateful day, when Ogieva Ikponmwonsa who was on a test-run of a vehicle he just repaired for a client crushed the woman and her child to death.
The eye witness further said that due to the impact of the head-on collision, Mr. Ogieva Ikponmwonsa became unconscious and was immediately rushed to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital for medical attention.
Another close source also said that the owner of the Toyota Highlander car who was visibly angry equally reported the matter to the police, demanding the replacement of his car by Ogieva Ikponmwonsa anytime he regains his consciousness, emphasising that Mr. Ogieva Ikponmwonsa does not have valid driving license, and wonder why he would decide to test-run a vehicle under such circumstance.
Family source revealed that Mr. Ogieva Ikponmwonsa has been prosecuted and sentenced to five (5) years imprisonment for killing the victims (mother and child) and driving without a valid driving licence.
The matter has however, took a new twist as Ogieva Ikponmwonsa with several other prisoners was said to have disappeared to unknown destination following the jail break at Auchi Prison barely few months of his conviction and incarceration.
A visit to No. 34 Agbonmwonba Street, Off Murtala Muhammed Way, Benin City by our correspondent revealed that the premises have been deserted due to fear of being attacked by the immediate family of the deceaseds as well as the owner of the cars involved in the accident.
As at the time of filling in this report, the whereabouts of Mr. Ogieva Ikponmwonsa who was said to have escaped from Auchi Prison due to the jail break is yet to be ascertained.
