Enugu – The Enugu State government has directed the state Commissioner of Police to report cases of arrests of persons to its Ministry of Justice on quarterly basis.
The Commissioner for Information, Dr Godwin Udeuhele, told newsmen on Friday in Enugu that the directive was one of the decisions taken at the monthly meeting of the state executive council.
He said that the information would assist the government to maintain `verifiable manual and electronic data base’ on information of arrests made by the police.
He added that the directive would also assist in quick dispensation of justice and monitor the effectiveness of crime fighting in the state.
Udeuhele said that the council approved the domestication of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act earlier passed by the National Assembly.
“The bill, if passed into law by the State House of Assembly will ensure that any person wrongly arrested may sue the police or police officer personally,“ he said.
The commissioner said that the meeting also approved the draft bill for a law to provide for the regulation of outdoor structures for the display of signages and advertisement in the state.
He said that if passed into law, the bill would generate revenue for the state and local government councils and also provide employment for the residents.
He said that the council approved the release of N100 million for the repairs and maintenance of some broken facilities at Enugu and Nsukka water schemes.
