Abuja – The House of Representatives yesterday mandated the Inspector – General of the Police, Solomon Arase to intensify efforts to ensure that the 3 girls abducted from Babington Macaulay Junior Seminary School in Ikorodu, Lagos State.
Reports have it that the girls were kidnapped on Monday, February 29 by heavily Armed men at about 8pm.
The resolution by the House was sequel to a motion on matters of urgent public importance entitled “urgent need to seek the release of abducted female of Babington Macaulay Junior Seminary School in Ikorodu” sponsored by Babjimi Benson.

“More than 24 hours after the sad incidence, the Nigeria Police Force and other concerned agencies of government have not been able to reunite the abducted girls with their parents.

“Worried that the incidence of insecurity in Ikorodu Federal Constituency is becoming worrisome as the security agencies of government are finding it difficult to protect lives and properties, “Benson told the House.

He said the perpetrators should be caught and dealth with accordingly.

Contributing to the motion, Ekpoattai Ime said that it is sad for a mother not to know where her child is adding that is against God and humanity.

“I urge this Honourable house and the IGP to intensify efforts to recover the girls. Girls are now kidnapped everyday in Nigeria even women, this is sad, “she said.

The House which adopted the motion when it was to a voice vote also mandated the Police and other agencies to step up strict surveillance in Ikorodu and all schools in the state to avoid similar occurrence.

Aisha Dukku said it is important that the House visits the school and the parents.

The Lower Chamber will also setup a special committee that will go to Lagos and interface with State’s Police Command and the school on the matter.

In another development, the House has urged the Executive Arm of Government to undertake an inventory of all the sources of revenue generation for the country.

The House also urged FG to undertake their current potentials and physical state.

This followed a motion by Rep. Sergius Ogun (Edo State), which was unanimously adopted by members through a voice vote.

Moving the motion, Ogun said that Nigeria had been portrayed as essentially a mono commodity economy whose source of revenue was crude oil.

He explained that in spite of the country being blessed with sundry natural resources capable of boosting its revenue baseline, it was important to enhance its economic fortunes and reduce the rate of poverty.

Ogun expressed concern that little regard had been paid to other veritable sources of revenue, thus diverting the attention of the appropriate institutions and agencies of government from focussing on the other sources.

“The current trend in global economies suggest a downward slide in the price of crude oil, necessitating the urgent need to look inwards in exploring other viable means of revenue generation.

“To enable government meet its huge financial obligations.

“If an effective audit of the various sources of revenue generation is done, it would assist the Federal Government to explore and exploit those other sources.

“It will also enable the National Assembly to track those sources for the purpose of making appropriate budgetary decisions,”he said.

The Deputy Speaker, Yusuf Lasun, who presided over the plenary, urged the Executive arm of Government to submit the report to the National Assembly within 90 days for further legislative action.
