BENIN CITY—Following the official announcement of the passage of the Benin Monarch, His Royal Majesty, Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Erediauwa last Friday, in Benin City, various markets across the Benin Metropolis remained closed in compliance with the palace directive.
Speaking with The NIGERIAN OBSERVER at Oba Market in Benin City, one Mrs. Okun noted that the closure of the market was in line with the norms and practice in Benin Kingdom aimed at giving respect to the departed Oba.
She noted that the various markets across the seven Benin Speaking Local Government Areas that make up Edo South Senatorial District in the state have been closed down for seven days.
She said that in Benin Kingdom, Oba of Benin, is regarded “as our God on earth and as a father who discharged his God-given responsibility for the development of the kingdom, he must be respected.”
She advised all Benin Sons and daughters to get ready for the coronation process, while praying God and the ancestors to protect and preserve the life of the Edaiken N’Uselu and Heir apparent to the throne of Benin Kingdom to enable him assume the ancestral position with good health, long life, abundant wisdom and humility in order to transform the kingdom to greater height.
