Akure – The Ondo State Police Command detained two fans for intrusion into the pitch of play after a week 20 match of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL).
The match, between Sunshine Stars FC and Abia Warriors ended 1-1. It was held at the Ondo State Sports Complex.
This is contained in a statement signed by the Media Manager of the Ondo State Football Agency (ODSFA), Wahab Bankole and released to newsmen on Monday in Akure.
According to the statement, John Ola Mafo, Chairman of ODSFA is said to have ordered the arrest of the suspects, Ademola Abanikanda and Segun Aforiti.
It quotes Mafo as condemning the attitude of the fans, saying they had no reason for their actions.
“The fact that the match officials did not live up to expectation as stipulated by the League Management Company (LMC), did not give any fan the right to take laws into their hands.
“It must also be noted that none of the two suspects is a supporter of Sunshine Stars as speculated.
`It is also useful to understand that the jerseys and official wears of the team can be freely purchased by interested members of the public.
“We will also like to put it on record that no player or official of Abia Warriors was harassed before, during and after the game,’’ the statement added.
It quotes Mafo as urging stakeholders to always support the team without exhibiting any behaviour that could hinder the development of the game and the fortunes of Sunshine Stars in particular.
The statement, however, appreciated the efforts of the LMC toward transforming the league and making football more attractive to the outside world.
