BENIN CITY-The police in Edo said they have successfully detonated and recovered an explosive planted to destroy an oil well at Gelegele Oil field in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State.
The Commissioner of Police in Edo State Mr Chris Ezike disclosed this to journalists in Benin City, yesterday.
CP Ezike said following a tip off received on July 10, 2016 the Command promptly despatched a team of Explosive Ordinance Detectives backed by Tactical Operatives to the scene in Gelegele Community.
He stated further that the objects suspected to be Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) were placed in the oil well head awaiting detonation.
“At the scene two sack bags containing Amoco (mixture of Ammonium Nitrate and fuel) were tied to the Oil Well.
“That on close examination of the IEDs, it was discovered that it contains two detonators, a strand of Cortex, dylatine (High explosive), power source and firing cable”. The CP stated.
The Police Commissioner however reassured members of the public of police readiness to protect lives and property in Edo State.
He advised residents to be security conscious and report suspicious persons, vehicles, materials and objects in their environment to the police through the following emergency lines: 08037646272, 08077773721 and 08000853831.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in Edo State Mr Chris Ezike has commended the people of the state, political parties, stakeholders and other security agencies for the peaceful conduct of the most political party primaries in Edo State.
The CP however enjoined them to sustain the peaceful atmosphere in order to replicate it during and after campaigns and the gubernatorial election.
