BENIN CITY – Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki on Monday assured the 4 Brigade, Nigeria Army, Benin City of his readiness to work with and support it for internal security.
Making the disclosure when the new Commander, 4 Brigade, Nigeria Army, Brig. Gen. Ibrahim Garba paid his maiden visit to Government House, Governor Obaseki said, “We have built infrastructure. We have built roads. We have built schools,” stressing that the next step is to consolidate on it and build human infrastructure, saying, “This is our goal. We will not succeed if we don’t work with you.”
Beside expressing worry over street children on the street at night, he explained that the building of these social amenities and growth attract human migration and this comes with the inherent security challenges hence the importance of security which is a primary purpose of government.
Noting that the federal government has its security appparti, Governor Obaseki said, “We have decided to have the neighbourhood watch,” which accomplishes local security through intelligence gathering to help curb crime.
Governor Obaseki, who expressed pleasure at the coronation of Oba Ewuare II, posting of the new Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG), Zone 5 and the new Commander, 4 Brigade, Nigeria Army to Edo as rare privilege coming on heels of his election as the Governor of Edo State, expressed confidence in the ability of the Commander in helping to ensure internal security and assured him of government support.
Earlier, the new Commander, 4 Brigade, Nigeria Army, Brig. Gen. Ibrahim Garba disclosed that he had come for the Governor to see him saying, “ I want to use this opportunity to tell you that the essence of my being here is for you to succeed because you are the chief security officer of the state.”
“I will do everything for you to succeed. That is my mandate. I should help you to secure lives and property, ” stressing that though the 4 Brigade is a military formation, it will work for the Governor and Edo people.
While assuring Governor Obaseki that he would not disappoint him, Brig, Gen. Garba urged Governor Obaseki to call on him any time the need arises and promised to share intelligence with the Governor just as he solicited for the support of the state government.
