Delta State:- More than 50 prison inmates of Warri Prison are currently on the run following the invasion of the prison by gun men suspected to be Niger Delta Avengers.
The incident which occurred close to midnight, took the wardens unaware, even worse still is the fact they didn’t have form of weapon to challenge or repel them. More than four Prison Wardens lost their life in that operation.

The Warri Prison, like many in the country had no armed Security Personnel guarding the premises. They relied on the high perimeter fence built around the compound, hence it was easy for the Militants to use a hand grenade to bring down the walls.

The Militants broke into the prison to free some of their members who were jailed and remanded in the prison for crimes ranging from vandalization of oil pipe line to kidnapping of oil workers.

After they have succeeded in freeing their members, other prisoners who saw it as an opportunity escaped alongside with the militants.

The morning after the attack, when a roll call was taken, it discovered that more than 50 inmates escaped.

A Panel of inquiry has been set up to investigate the matter and report back to the government.
